CIESIN has received two recent funding awards to move towards completion of Gridded Population of the World version 5 (GPWv5). One award is from the Global Human Settlements Layer (GHSL) group Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union in Ispra, Italy, which is supporting the compilation of census and boundary data necessary to produce GPW. The other award is from Columbia's own Research Stabilization Fund, and supports data acquisition and preprocessing of data for the countries that have not yet been acquired, and production of the final data products. According to Linda Pistolesi, GPW project lead and a GIS Manager at CIESIN, "This funding will allow CIESIN to resume work on this important data set and release version 5 by mid-2026."
