CIESIN's Director, Alex de Sherbinin, has published an essay in the CODATA Data Science Journal that describes the efforts of the staff of the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) to find a home for its data sets after the contract was terminated. The data rescue effort was undertaken in a state of uncertainty surrounding long-term access to the data. It contains lessons learned for other data repositories that face an uncertain future.
Dr. de Sherbinin served as SEDAC's deputy manager and then manager for nearly 20 years.
