CIESIN staff have a busy few months lined up with summer travel and events. Here is a pick list.
- 24-29 May: Senior Information Scientist and IPCC DDC Manager Xiaoshi Xing attended the 2026 JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting in Chiba, Japan. He gave a conference oral presentation: From FAIR to CARE: Advancing IPCC AR7 Data Stewardship for Open Science.
- 1-5 June: Associate Director Dana Thomson traveled to Nairobi for the Global Data Festival & Kenya Space Expo & Conference 2026 (GDF–KSEC 2026) in Nairobi, Kenya, and attended an invitation-only event on Building National Space Programs: Turnkey Space Programs Tailored to National Needs hosted by the Kenya Space Agency, Space42, and Microsoft.
- 3-4 June: Director Alex de Sherbinin gave a keynote presentation at a symposium on Climate Mobility Justice organized by former postdoc Elena Giacomelli in Bologna, Italy. While in Bologna he also gave a talk at a pre-conference workshop on Demography and Climate Change prior to the European Population Conference.
- 8-9 June: Dr. de Sherbinin was on the examination committee for the PhD defense of Lucas Gobatti, a PhD candidate at ETH-Zurich focusing on urban heat mitigation through blue-green infrastructure, and gave a talk on water and climate migration at EAWAG, the Swiss national research institute for water resources.
- 12-24 June: Dr. de Sherbinin is in Bangalore, India for fieldwork associated with the President's Global Innovation Fund project on displaced livelihoods, where he and former Associate Research Scientist Dr. Fabien Cottier and former postdoc Robbin Van Duijne, accompanied by four Columbia graduate students, will conduct research on why young people are leaving the agricultural sector.
- 24-25 June: Dr. de Sherbinin will visit Athens, Greece, for high-level meetings with the Greek government related to an EU-funded joint-MA program with the University of Thessaly focused on Humanitarian Action.
- 6-9 July: Senior Information Scientist and IPCC DDC Manager Xiaoshi Xing will participate in the IPCC TG-Data 2026 F2F Meeting in Bueno Aires, Argentina.
- 9 July: the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and CIESIN will launch the 2026 Environmental Performance Index at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research in New York, the 11th release since the EPI was launched in 2006.
