CIESIN staff co-author article on water production via renewable energy

August 20, 2025

CIESIN contributed to a new article on the potential for water production using renewable energy powered desalination to meet future water demand. Water demand in the U.S. is forecast to increase 40% by 2050 and 220% by 2070, which will lead to water deficits in the future. Simulations of desalination operations in different regions of the U.S. were performed to estimate the water that could be produced. The study shows the potential of desalination technologies with zero liquid discharge, powered by renewable energy sources, can help meet future water demand in the municipal and industrial sectors. CIESIN associate director Greg Yetman contributed coding and GIS expertise to the analysis.
