As CIESIN celebrates 35 years since its founding as an independent nonprofit in Michigan and 26 years at Columbia University, it is pleased to announce a name change from the Center for International Earth Science Information Network to the Center for Integrated Earth System Information. The Center will retain its widely known acronym. According to center director Alex de Sherbinin, "The new name better captures CIESIN's core strengths in integrating the human dimension into Earth system sciences through data, modeling and research, as reflected in CIESIN's recently released Strategic Plan." A State of the Planet article describes CIESIN's many contributions over its years, including as a pioneer in dissemination of data and information over the Internet and in population mapping and spatial analysis. CIESIN will build upon this strong legacy under its new name, leadership and strategy.
