Juan F. Martinez

Juan F. Martinez, MPA, is a Senior Resaerch Staff Assistant at the Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) of the Columbia Climate School and a geospatial and statistical researcher specializing in spatial socioeconomic, demographic, environmental data, and remote sensing.

His work focuses on multidimensional poverty mapping, analysis of population dynamics, vulnerability, climate risk, and the development of large-scale geospatial datasets for research and policy applications. He has contributed to major data products including the Global Gridded Relative Deprivation Index, the GRID3 project, and EnvClim Grids. 

Martinez is also a lead author of peer-reviewed research on the use of NASA Black Marble nighttime-lights data for population analysis. He has developed open-science educational materials, delivered technical workshops in English and Spanish, and trained researchers and students in geospatial analysis, vulnerability assessment, Earth-observation data, and reproducible research.

He holds an Executive Master of Public Administration with concentrations in Urban & Social Policy and Global Policy Studies from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Development, magna cum laude, from the Earth Institute and Columbia University.
