Elena Giacomelli
Bio
Elena Giacomelli is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) of the Columbia Climate School and a Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bologna. She holds a Ph.D. in Global and International Studies on migration and cultural processes. Elena was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Social Development (University of the Western Cape), Third World Studies Center (University of the Philippines Diliman); and a visiting scholar at Comparative Network on Refugee Externalisation Policies (Melbourne University). She is PI of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Global Fellowship project "PANICOCENE. Reframing Climate Change-induced Mobilities”, which aims to investigate and analyze how media discourses and narratives can lead to stereotypes of climate-induced migration, thereby influencing the perceptions of readers, general public, and ultimately decision-making, and to propose a space for collaboration among activists, artivists, journalists, and academics on the issue. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the DEAR project ClimateOfChange, examining the nexus between migration and the climate crisis, and the Horizon2020 project Welcoming Spaces, investigating the nexus between shrinking areas, migration and welcoming spaces. Her research focused on the themes of mobilities and migration, borders, climate change, ethnography, framing and narratives. She utilized visual methods to work in a participatory creative manner with my participants to create space for plural narratives to emerge.
