CIESIN’s Deputy Director, Bob Chen, is Elected as CODATA's Secretary General

Robert S. Chen, Deputy Director and a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), was elected to a four-year term as Secretary General of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) of the International Council for Science (ICSU) at its 24th General Assembly, which took place in Berlin, Germany on November 11–12.

PERN Cyberseminar on Urban Spatial Expansion: The Environmental and Health Dimensions, November 30- December 15, 2004

The Population-Environment Research Network Web site will hold a cyberseminar on Urban Spatial Expansion: The Environmental and Health Dimensions from November 30 to December 15, 2004. The cyberseminar features a background paper by Dr. Charles Redman, Director of the Consortium for the Study of Rapidly Urbanizing Regions, and Ms. Nancy Jones, a researcher at the International Institute for Sustainability, Arizona State University; and a distinguished panel of experts.

Global Spatial Data and Information User Workshop, September 21-23, 2004, Palisades, NY

Presentations are now available for download from the Web site for the Global Spatial Data and Information User Workshop, which took place September 21-23 at the Monell Building on the Lamont-Doherty Campus of Columbia University, Palisades, New York. This workshop brought a core set of institutions actively involved in global spatial data and information development and dissemination together with representatives of key user communities to address both short- and long-term needs for coordination and collaboration. The overall purpose of the workshop was to coordinate spatial data and information dissemination among key actors in the global data community in order to better meet user needs at global as well as regional and national levels.

PERN Cyberseminar on Population, Consumption and the Environment, May 17-31, 2004

The Population-Environment Research Network will host an online seminar focusing on consumption-environment research and its linkages to the population-environment research agenda. The purpose of this seminar is to explore a research agenda for studying the linkages between population, consumption and environment in both developed and developing countries. It features a background paper by PERN's Coordinator, Alex de Sherbinin, and Sara Curran of Princeton University, as well as a distinguished panel of experts.

GCRIO to be Transferred

January 30, 2004

Starting on February 9, the Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO) will be transferred to and managed by the U.S. Climate Change Science Program Office in Washington, DC. The management and staff at CIESIN are proud of the service that they have provided over the past decade following our design, launch and implementation of GCRIO in 1993. GCRIO was authorized by Section 204 of the U.S. Global Change Research Act of 1990.

CIESIN Receiveds Two Grants from the U.S. Geological Survey

CIESIN has received two contracts totaling $876,000 over three years from the U.S. Geological Survey to establish a Northeast Node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure.
