Introduction to Summary Tape Files


STF1 (Summary Tape File 1):
STF1 (1990) includes 100% population and housing counts and characteristics similar in subject to the 1980 STF1 but with expanded detail. In 1990, there are about 1,000 cells/items for each geographic area.

More detailed information about the STF1 files is presented here. This information generally refers to the collection years of 1980 and 1990.

STF2 (Summary Tape File 2):
STF2 (1990) contains 100% population and housing characteristics similar to the 1980 STF2 but with expanded detail. STF2 shows more subject detail than STF1. STF2 files also includes iterations for the total population and iterations for race and Hispanic origin which is available separately from the total population record. In 1990, there are 2,000+ cells/items for each geographic area.

STF3 (Summary Tape File 3):
STF3 (1990) includes sample population and housing characteristics similar in subject area to the 1980 STF3 but with expanded detail. In 1990, there are 3,300+ cells/items for each geographic area.

More detailed information about the STF3 files is presented here. This information generally refers to the collection years of 1980 and 1990.

STF4 (Summary Tape File 4):
STF4 (1990) contains sample population and housing characteristics. It shows more detail than the STF3 files. Over 8,800+ cells/items for each geographic area. Each STF4 file includes a set of tabulations for the total population and separate presentations of tabulations by race, Hispanic origin, and possibly by selected ancestry.
